Overview

This course is a recognised adult teaching/training qualification, designed to equip students with skills in teaching, designing and evaluating learning and training programs for adults in workplace and educational settings. Students complete a core set of adult education subjects, a choice of electives, and select a major in either human resource development, vocational education and training, language literacy and numeracy education, or Aboriginal studies. Students engage in a variety of learning activities, work with academic advisors and workplace practitioners and undertake individual and group learning projects.

This course enhances students' professional development, skills and career prospects in adult education. It is designed with flexiblity to enable full-time or part-time study for students while already working in full-time employment. It also provides opportunities to interact with other professionals and develop important professional networks.

Course aims

The course aims to develop practitioners who have competence in teaching and training adults, a deep understanding of learning and a commitment to the education of others.

Career options

Career options include human resources or training and development in the private or public sector; workplace education developing staff or managing organisational change; vocational education in TAFE, the armed forces, the police service, emergency services, health care agencies or Aboriginal education; or working with adults developing their language, literacy and numeracy skills. The course is a qualification leading to work in TAFE, AMES, community colleges, and English and language schools.

Additional admission requirements

Application is direct to UTS.

The Vocational Education and Training major requires at least five years' industrial experience, preferably formal professional/trade qualifications and access to a minimum of three hours authentic work in teaching per week.

The Human Resource Development major requires relevant work experience and access to an authentic work environment for undertaking a practical teaching or training component of the course.

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students applying for the Aboriginal Studies major must: be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, not have completed a Bachelor's or higher degree previously, and demonstrate the literacy skills needed to successfully study the course.

Non-recent school leavers are required to submit a Personal Statement to UTS by 30 Novemeber 2006.

Additional assumed knowledge

Any two units of English.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is three years of full-time study. It is possible to extend the time taken to complete the course by taking fewer than the full-time number of credit points per semester.

A variety of attendance patterns is available, subject to adequate levels of interest.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Education in Adult Education totals 144 credit points of study. Students complete 48 credit points of core subjects, up to 48 credit points of subjects depending on their selected major, and 48 credit points or more of electives, depending on their major.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Language, Literacy and Numeracy major includes a professional experience placement for students not currently working in the field.

VET and HRD majors require student access to an authentic work environment for undertaking a practical teaching or training component of the course.
