The Fashion and Textile design course provides a framework within which students gain the necessary knowledge and skills in creative design, technical applications, and critical theory to enter fashion and textile design and its related industries. Students are encouraged to develop creative solutions in the context of a rapidly changing global fashion business.
The course has links with the industry and guest speakers include designers, journalists, and marketing and business experts. From the third year of study, students have the flexibility to choose a focused career in fashion and/or textiles or in a related field, such as fashion media. The course has two fourth-year industry awards that provide a start to graduates.
This course aims to produce graduates who aspire to the highest level of practice and are capable of adapting to the changing nature of the industry while developing a personal philosophy and style. The context of the course covers aspects from street to high-end fashion, and fashion to interior textiles. While many subjects are studio based, theoretical skills are seen as an integral part of the production of original, challenging design solutions.
Career options include fashion or textile designer, illustrator, buyer, stylist or fashion editor. Some students start their own business, while others work within an established company. Graduates may also continue studies at postgraduate level.
International students (excluding those studying in an Australian high school) must submit an application to the UTS International Office (in person, by mail or online) or through an accredited UTS representative. The application must include a portfolio of the student's work (preferrably provided on CD or DVD).
In addition to the standard application requirements, all non-current school leaver applicants to this course are required to submit online a compulsory Personal Statement directly to UTS by the end of September. For further information, see UTS Personal Statements.
Any two units of English.
Textiles and design, design and technology, and visual arts are recommended.
