This degree is designed to educate and train graduates for careers in medical and health-related sciences. It aims to produce professional medical scientists with highly adaptable and practical scientific skills accompanied by a thorough grounding in theory. It specialises in the human body's structure, function and disease processes at the cellular, whole organ and behavioural level.
This course provides the foundation knowledge and skills for students who wish to go on to postgraduate programs such as medicine, occupational health and safety, biomedical engineering, nutrition and dietetics, complementary medicine, public health and health administration.
Career options include positions in government departments, private and public hospitals and public health units. Pharmaceutical companies look to medical science graduates to work in clinical trials coordination, drug registration, as marketing or technical representatives and as policy analysts. Graduates also work as consultants, providing links with bodies such as state health departments and the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Recent graduates have played an important role in developing medical technologies such as the 'mind switch', a device for hands-free control of electrical devices. Others have undertaken higher degrees or gone on to postgraduate studies in medicine or dentistry.
Mathematics; any two units of English; and any two units of science.
HSC Mathematics Extension 1; Chemistry; and Biology are recommended.
This course is offered on a full-time attendance basis only. The course duration is three years full time, four years full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students), or four years full time with Honours. Other patterns of attendance may also be permitted. Attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University.
The course totals 144 credit points and consists of six stages of study. Subjects are divided into core subjects and elective subjects, some of which may form a coherent second major strand. Students generally choose these subjects with a particular theme or area of expertise in mind, such as a particular area of study, through subjects available within the biological and biomedical sciences, or by way of subjects from other parts of the Faculty of Science or other faculties of UTS. Students may be eligible to take a second major in the biomedical science area (provided that they fulfil all of the prerequisites for subjects listed in the recommended biomedical subject strands).
Students should consider the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students) – an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.
The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) is available as an additional year of full-time study to students who are able to arrange a period of industrial training. It is not offered to international students.
