Overview

This course provides students with a broad knowledge of modern biotechnology with an emphasis on DNA technology, cell biology and up-to-date industrial applications, plus a wide range of practical skills, supplemented with relevant aspects of ethics law and business.

Biotechnology is the science of the future, with superior employment rates due to a strong professional and industry focus. Students of this course gain a professional qualification in biological science and a firm basis in the industrial aspects of biotechnology.

Career options

Career options include biotechnological research, development and production positions in agricultural, biomedical, chemical, communications, energy, environmental, manufacturing, medical and pharmaceutical companies. Graduates can innovate, invent or research biotechnological science, or start their own company to capitalise on their ideas.

Additional assumed knowledge

Mathematics; any two units of English; and any two units of science.

HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Chemistry is recommended.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered over three years full time, six years part time, four years full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students), or four years full time with Honours. Other patterns of attendance may also be permitted.

Full-time attendance is approximately 24 hours each week at the University. Part-time attendance is approximately 12 hours each week at the University. It is expected that employers will release part-time students for at least one half-day per week for attendance at classes.

Course structure

This course totals 144 credit points of study. Subjects are divided into core subjects and elective or second major subjects. For the award of the degree, students must satisfactorily complete all core subjects and 32 credit points of approved elective or second major subjects. Elective subjects may be combined to form a cohesive strand comprising either subjects allied to biotechnology or a second major in a field of interest to the student.

Students are also encouraged to undertake the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students) – an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038), a period of industrial training, is available with an additional year of full-time study. It is not offered to international students.
