This course is designed to produce graduates who are prepared for scientific practice in the biotechnology industry or who are equipped for entry into business and management in science-based businesses or institutions.
This course allows graduates to choose between a career in business or biotechnological science. It is particularly suitable for a career in the rapidly expanding and profitable biotechnology business sector where both disciplines are required.
Career options include manager or scientist in a bio-analytical lab, bio-business, CSIRO, government biotechnology support, a regulatory agency, stockbroking, vaccine manufacture or wine production. Graduates can also be an analyst, biotechnologist, marketer, product developer or research scientist with industry or scientific research organisations.
Mathematics; English; and at least one science subject.
Students can complete the course over four years full time. Full-time attendance involves approximately 16 hours each week on campus. Students may also be able to complete the course in a part-time mode, usually at the rate of two subjects per semester (a 50 per cent load) taking eight years to complete. Part-time students may need to attend science classes for at least one half-day per week, in addition to evening classes.
Students may also consider undertaking the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038).
The course comprises a total of 192 credit points, made up of 96 credit points of biotechnology subjects and 96 credit points of business subjects. Refer to the Bachelor of Business (C10026) entry for the major areas of study.
The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) comprises a year of work experience taken in conjunction with 12 credit points of subjects. It is not offered to international students.

A Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) (C09022) program is available to eligible students.
There is provision for students already enrolled in a Bachelor of Biotechnology or a Bachelor of Business degree to transfer to this combined degree program, provided they meet the entry requirements for the combined degree.
Students wishing to transfer from the combined degree program to the Bachelor of Business (C10026) single degree program, and whose UAI is less than the current entry rank for the Bachelor of Business, are required to apply for admission through UAC in the non-current school-leaver category.
Depending on disciplines chosen, students may be eligible for entry to the relevant professional associations.
