This subject is an introduction to fundamental concepts in chemistry. Topics covered are: atomic structure; periodic table; reactions of ions in solution; redox reactions; the mole concept and stoichiometry; ideal gas equation; electron configurations, energy levels, and trends in the periodic table; basic concepts of chemical bonding; molecular geometry and bonding theories; intermolecular forces; bonding in solids; introduction to carbon chemistry, functional group concept, constitutional isomers; introduction to chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibria. There is a laboratory program which complements the learning experiences in the lectures.
