Overview

This course is designed to produce graduates who are prepared for scientific practice in the biotechnology industry or who are equipped for entry into business and management in science-based businesses or institutions.

This course allows graduates to choose between a career in business or biotechnological science. It is particularly suitable for a career in the rapidly expanding and profitable biotechnology business sector where both disciplines are required.

Career options

Career options include manager or scientist in a bio-analytical lab, bio-business, CSIRO, government biotechnology support, a regulatory agency, stockbroking, vaccine manufacture or wine production. Graduates can also be an analyst, biotechnologist, marketer, product developer or research scientist with industry or scientific research organisations.

Assumed knowledge

Mathematics; English; and at least one science subject.

Course duration and attendance

Students can complete the course over four years full time. Full-time attendance involves approximately 16 hours each week on campus. Students may also be able to complete the course in a part-time mode, usually at the rate of two subjects per semester (a 50 per cent load) taking eight years to complete. Part-time students may need to attend science classes for at least one half-day per week, in addition to evening classes.

Students may also consider undertaking the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038).

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 192 credit points, made up of 96 credit points of biotechnology subjects and 96 credit points of business subjects. Refer to the handbook entry for the major areas of study.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) comprises a year of work experience taken in conjunction with 12 credit points of subjects. It is not offered to international students.
