Overview

This degree offers a diverse and liberal education with an international focus on emerging design practice. It celebrates interior design as a complex and evolving discipline that focuses on human habitation, identity and the role of design as a shaper and facilitator of human experiences and practices.

Students engage with concepts of spatial language and experience, human behaviour and perception, materiality and form making to create innovative and sustainable spatial environments.

The combined degree program in Interior Design and International Studies provides students with additional practical skills, in particular those that make them aware of the international contexts of interior design by providing them with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of a language and culture other than English.

The Bachelor of Interior Design is one of the longest-running and most respected courses of its kind in Australia. It is recognised internationally and graduates are highly valued in the profession both locally and overseas. Students are encouraged to develop as critical practitioners, independent learners and innovative thinkers.

Course aims

Through experimental design, applied research and theory, model making, drawing and digital processes, students explore design possibilities, creatively, innovatively and strategically.

There is an emphasis on extending students' skills and capabilities, through project-based design, to respond intelligently to new and changing sociocultural contexts and technological innovations in order to design in ways that improve the human condition.

The combined degree in Interior Design and International Studies produces graduates who have developed perspectives and skills that enable them to meet the professional demands of an internationalised marketplace.

Career options

This creative and challenging course offers graduates entry into a range of exciting careers. The majority of graduates work in commercial interior design both locally and internationally, while others go on to work in event design, exhibition, museum and interaction design, theatre, film and television production, virtual worlds, furniture design, research, strategies, journalism, and education. Career options are enhanced by international experience, making students more marketable to prospective employers.

Admission requirements

International students (excluding those studying in an Australian high school) must submit an application to UTS International (in person, by mail or online) or through an accredited UTS representative. The application must include a portfolio of up to five examples of the student's work demonstrating awareness, imagination and skills relevant to design (preferably provided on CD or DVD).

There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

In addition to the standard application requirements, all non-current school leaver applicants to this course are required to submit a compulsory Personal Statement directly to UTS by the end of September. Further information is available from UTS Personal Statements.

Assumed knowledge

There are no prior language requirements for the International Studies program.

Course duration and attendance

The Bachelor of Design in Interior Design Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is a six-year, full-time degree. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

Course structure

Students must complete 288 credit points of study, comprising 192 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Design in Interior Design (C10057) and 96 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies.

The Interior Design program allows for specialised and flexible learning paths in which experimentation, exploration and investigation are offered. In Years 2, 3 and 5, Interior Design students may choose a specialised sequence of study from a range of elective core subjects.

In the first semester of the final year of study, students complete a research dissertation, two interior professional core subjects and an interdisciplinary design theory subject. In the final semester of study, students complete an individual semester-long design project in which they demonstrate their particular interior design stance.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students study language and culture in the second and third year and spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.
