Overview

This degree offers a diverse and liberal education with an international focus on emerging design practice. It celebrates interior design as a complex and evolving discipline that focuses on human habitation, identity and the role of design as a shaper and facilitator of human experiences and practices.

Students engage with concepts of spatial language and experience, human behaviour and perception, materiality and form making to create innovative and sustainable spatial environments.

The Bachelor of Interior Design is one of the longest-running and most respected courses of its kind in Australia. It is recognised internationally and graduates are highly valued in the profession both locally and overseas. Students are encouraged to develop as critical practitioners, independent learners and innovative thinkers.

Course aims

Through experimental design, applied research and theory, model making, drawing and digital processes, students explore design possibilities, creatively, innovatively and strategically.

There is an emphasis on extending students' skills and capabilities, through project-based design, to respond intelligently to new and changing sociocultural contexts and technological innovations in order to design in ways that improve the human condition.

Career options

This creative and challenging course offers graduates entry into a range of exciting careers. The majority of graduates work in commercial interior design both locally and internationally, while others go on to work in event design, exhibition, museum and interaction design, theatre, film and television production, virtual worlds, furniture design, research, strategies, journalism and education.

Admission requirements

International students (excluding those studying in an Australian high school) must submit an application to UTS International (in person, by mail or online) or through an accredited UTS representative. The application must include a portfolio of up to five examples of the student's work demonstrating awareness, imagination and skills relevant to design (preferably provided on CD or DVD).

Assumed knowledge

Any two units of English.

Visual Arts; Art History; and/or Design are recommended. For non-current school leavers, previous related study or work experience would be of assistance.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a four-year, full-time basis. The hours of attendance are generally four full days per week. Students can study this program part time after consultation with the course director.

Course structure

Students must complete 192 credit points comprising 156 credit points from the core program, 24 credit points of elective subjects and 12 credit points of optional design studies subjects.
