Overview

This combined degree program is aimed at increasing students' awareness of international contexts and producing graduates who are well prepared for professional careers in science in an international setting.

Career options

Career options include coastal management expert, communication specialist, computer modeller, cytologist, energy technologist, engineering geologist, environmental consultant, environmental research officer, exploration geologist, health and medical physicist, marine scientist, marketer, material analyst, medical laboratory scientist, national parks research officer, nursery manager or owner, product development specialist, research scientist, scientific journalist and technical specialist.

Additional admission requirements

Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Science (C10166). There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

Additional assumed knowledge

No prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered over five years full time, six years full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students), or six years full time with Honours. Full-time attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University.

Course structure

All students must complete 240 credit points of study, comprising 144 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Science and 96 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.

Students are also encouraged to undertake the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students), an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) – a period of industrial training – is available with an additional year of full-time study. It is not offered to international students.
