Overview

This course is offered jointly by the Faculty of Information Technology and the Faculty of Business and is awarded with two testamurs. The information technology component provides a sound education in all aspects of computing and information technology for students who intend to make a career in the profession. The business component provides students with the knowledge, competencies and values necessary for fulfilling an effective career in business.

Graduates with solid IT skills who also understand business operations are in strong demand in industry. This combined program allows students to gain two degrees leading towards a career in business IT operations in only four years.

Course aims

The aim of this course is to prepare graduates to apply an in-depth knowledge of information technology to the business activities of an organisation.

Career options

Career options include accountant, advertising consultant, banker, e-business developer, economist, financial planner, information systems developer, management consultant, marketing manager, IT project manager, software developer, systems analyst, web developer.

Additional assumed knowledge

Mathematics and any two units of English.

Mathematics Extension 1 and English Advanced are recommended.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Students who have previously undertaken study at a university or other recognised tertiary education institution may be eligible for some academic credit for their prior study if the subjects previously completed are deemed by the Faculty of Information Technology or Faculty of Business to be equivalent to core subjects in the course.

The prior study must have been completed before commencement of this course, but no earlier than three years before commencement. Students must be able to demonstrate that their knowledge is current.

Credit is not normally granted for elective subjects.

Students who have completed a Diploma of Information Technology or a Diploma in the field of Business at TAFE NSW may be eligible for some academic credit in this course, but will be assessed individually.

International applicants who have successfully completed either the Insearch Diploma of Business Studies or the Insearch Diploma of Business and Commerce, with a weighted average mark (WAM) of 60 per cent and no more than two failures, may enter directly into the second year of the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Computing. International applications who have successfully completed the Insearch Diploma of Information Technology, with a WAM of 60 per cent and no more than two failures, are eligible for 30 credit points advanced standing.

Recognition of prior learning in this course for study completed at a private college is available only if an articulation agreement exists between the college and the relevant UTS Faculty (Information Technology or Business).

Course duration and attendance

The course is completed in four years, full time. The course consists of eight academic semesters of full-time study. Some subjects may be offered in an optional Summer session so that students can fast-track their studies.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 192 credit points, comprising 96 credit points of study in business and 96 credit points of study in information technology.

In the business stream, students must complete eight foundation core subjects (6 credit points each) and a business major (48 credit points).

In the information technology stream, students must complete 10 core subjects totalling 66 credit points. Students are also required to complete one IT sub-major (24 credit points) and one IT elective subject (6 credit points).

Some business majors require specific foundation business core subjects to be undertaken. Some IT sub-majors require a specific IT elective to be undertaken.

An additional publication to assist students in choosing their elective, major and sub-major, is available from the Faculty of Information Technology.

Immediately after enrolment all students in this course are required to undertake a test of English language proficiency. A result of this test may be that a student is strongly recommended to study a specific elective subject to improve written communication skills. The Faculty of Information Technology will provide details at enrolment.

Course program

An example program is shown below for a student who has chosen Advertising and Promotions Management for the Business major. In the program shown below, in semesters that include electives, students may choose either an IT sub-major subject or an IT elective subject.

Students enrolled in this program offshore at Taylors College follow a sequence of subjects which differs from the normal course structure and fits in with their study program.

Note that subjects listed as electives and IT sub-majors are only offered in a particular semester (or year) if there is sufficient demand and the Faculty has the necessary resources.

Students interested in research and who excel in their studies are eligible to undertake one additional full-time year of study in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information Technology (C09019) program.

Australian Computer Society; The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia; CPA Australia

Graduates are eligible for professional-level membership of the ACS. Students who complete the Accounting major may be eligible for membership of CPA Australia and/or The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
