Overview
The Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication emphasises creativity, innovation and communication in the analysis and visualisation of ideas and information through print, screen and interactive multimedia technologies. Students are encouraged to develop their own creative abilities and to be aware of the broader cultural, social and political impact of their design work. The combined degree program provides students with additional practical skills by providing the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of a language and culture other than English.
This course teaches conceptual skills and design processing in the context of communication, not just purely technical skills. Students gain broad-based visual communication design skills with an emphasis on ideas which prepares them for senior roles in the globalised industry. They can undertake a professional internship during third year which gives them both work experience and a well-developed folio. Subjects in the course are centred on integrated and interdisciplinary activities.
Course aims
The combined degree in Visual Communication and International Studies produces graduates who work with words, images and audio in a diverse range of visual design practices. It also prepares students for diversity in design practice and expects graduates to aspire to the highest professional levels in an internationalised marketplace. Students develop individual talent and imagination by specialising in media and projects suited to their own professional interests.
Career options
Career options include designer in advertising, animation, broadcasting, exhibition, graphics, illustration, new media, photography or publications.
Admission requirements
International students (excluding those studying in an Australian high school) must submit an application to UTS International (in person, by mail or online) or through an accredited UTS representative. The application must include a portfolio of up to 10 examples of the student's work demonstrating awareness, imagination and skills relevant to design (preferably provided on CD or DVD).
There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs.
In addition to the standard application requirements, all non-current school leaver applicants to this course are required to submit a compulsory Personal Statement directly to UTS by the end of September. Further information is available from UTS Personal Statements.
