87539 VC Technology: Introduction to Web Media
6cpRequisite(s): 87333 VC Technology: Typography, Text and Form AND 87443 VC Technology: Type for Print
Undergraduate
The Web is a relatively new medium and a whole new field of employment for designers. Although the design issues are largely the same as in other media, the limits of HTML and bandwidth for downloading pages means learning new programs and understanding some important technical constraints. In a professional context, websites are often produced and maintained with a team of programmers and others who may not appreciate the role of design. In this field, design has many faces: interface design, information design, interaction design, etc. This subject encourages versatility in the solution of technical problems encountered in designing for the Web. Students gain an understanding of the current work practices in web design, including copyright and ethics, and get hands-on experience of relevant web software (DreamWeaver, ImageReady).
