Overview

This combined degree program is aimed at increasing awareness of international contexts and producing graduates who are well prepared for professional careers in science in an international setting.

Career options

This industry-respected degree provides students with career options in bioremediation of contaminated sites, brewing beer, engineering agricultural crops, growing yeast for bread, managing a biotechnology company, manufacturing drugs or medicine, mining uranium, regulating the expanding bioscience industries, researching anti-cancer drugs, teaching science, trading in biotechnology shares or writing about science.

Graduates have the opportunity to work overseas or in Australia in organisations with international networks or links.

Additional admission requirements

Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Biotechnology (C10172). There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

Additional assumed knowledge

No prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered over five years full time, six years full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students), or six years full time with Honours.

Attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

Course structure

Students must complete 240 credit points of study, comprising 144 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Biotechnology and 96 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.

Students are also encouraged to undertake the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students), an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038), a period of industrial training, is available with an additional year of full-time study. It is not offered to international students.
