Overview

The course combines a professional degree with immersion in another language and culture, enhancing professional training and career options. This combined degree seeks to augment the value of public communication by broadening awareness and understanding of another language and culture.

International perspectives on public relations and advertising enable UTS graduates to transcend national barriers and be competitive in a global environment. Career options are enhanced by international experience, making students more adept at international and cross-cultural professional practice.

Career options

Career options include communication strategists, public relations consultants, advertising account executives, media liaison officers, special events coordinators, publicity officers, political media advisers, advertising copywriters, community relations managers, media researchers, and marketing communication specialists.

Admission requirements

There are no prior language requirements for the International Studies program. Entry level to the various Language and Culture programs depends upon students' prior knowledge of the relevant language. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific country major, although every effort is made to meet their preferences.

Assumed knowledge

HSC English and computer literacy. There are no prior language requirements for the International Studies program.

External articulation

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has established recognition of prior learning packages with the following institutions for the courses listed:

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a five-year, full-time basis. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

Course structure

A total of 240 credit points is allocated to this combined degree course: 144 credit points to the Communication degree and 96 credit points to the International Studies component.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.

Course program

Students have the option of completing either a Public Relations stream (STM90541) or an Advertising stream (STM90540) in Year 1 of this course. The example program below is for a student commencing in Autumn semester with the Germany major as the chosen International Studies major and Global Studies as the chosen sub-major.

Other sub-majors may be chosen from the list of sub-majors in CBK90701. Electives can be chosen from the choice block CBK90702. Other countries may be chosen from the list of majors in CBK90005; the program has the same structure but with subjects specific to the chosen country major.
