Overview

This course provides an in-depth understanding of biological processes with emphasis on human biomedical science and laboratory experimentation. It encompasses a number of interface areas between modern technology, biology and medicine. Research into disease prevention or treatment is encouraged in the final years.

The course provides a strong professional and industry focus. With extensive theoretical knowledge and advanced laboratory skills in medical laboratory science, students obtain a solid background in the biological/medical sciences and practical experimentation.

Career options

Career options include positions in diagnostic medical laboratories, biomedical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Students may pursue a career in biomedical research in hospitals or other research institutes. Biomedical science also provides excellent preparation for entry into graduate medical degrees.

Additional assumed knowledge

Mathematics and at least one science subject.

Course duration and attendance

Students can complete the course over three years full time, six years part time or four years full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students), or four years full time with Honours. Other patterns of attendance may also be permitted.

Full-time attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week on-campus. Part-time attendance involves approximately 12 hours each week on-campus. It is expected that employers will release part-time students for at least one half-day per week for attendance at classes.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 144 credit points to graduate.

Subjects are divided into core subjects and elective subjects, some of which may form a coherent second major strand.

All students enrolled in the degree must satisfactorily complete all core subjects for award of the degree and, in addition, must satisfactorily complete the required number of credit points of elective/second major subjects. Students generally choose these subjects with a particular theme or area of expertise in mind.

Students are also encouraged to undertake the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students), an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) is available with an additional year of full-time study. It is not offered to international students.
