Overview

This degree is offered through the National Centre for Groundwater Management in collaboration with the Faculties of Engineering and Science. It is designed to enable students to develop specialist skills in the area of groundwater management, including aspects of geology, hydrology, hydraulics and resource management, providing a multidisciplinary perspective to issues of groundwater management.

This degree is designed for students working in the area of groundwater resource management and for recent graduates who would like to specialise in this field.

Course aims

Groundwater studies provide students with industry-desired skills in managing groundwater resources and contaminated sites. The course covers all aspects of fundamental hydrogeology, geochemistry, groundwater modelling, geostatistics and site characterisation required to allow students to contribute immediately to the groundwater industry.

Career options

Career options include groundwater consultant, groundwater modeller, hydrogeologist or hydrologist.

Articulation

Work undertaken in this Graduate Diploma may be credited towards a Master's degree, provided the subject coverage requirements of the Master's degree are met in full. However, completion of the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Groundwater Management does not guarantee admission to the Master's program.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants should possess a degree in Engineering from UTS or hold an equivalent qualification from another recognised tertiary institution. Applicants with other qualifications relevant to groundwater resource development may be accepted for admission. A curriculum vitae should also be submitted.

Course duration and attendance

The course can be completed in one year of full-time study, or two-and-a-half to three years of part-time study.

It is offered in block or distance mode. Both block and distance modes are available in Autumn semester, however, only distance mode is available in Spring semester.

Course structure

Students complete 48 credit points of study comprising four compulsory subjects, two electives (an approved postgraduate subject may replace one of the electives) and a groundwater engineering project.
