49555 Groundwater Modelling

6cp; block (totalling 36 hours; Autumn semester only); distance (Autumn or Spring semester); availability: all courses; core for ME(GWM), GradDipE(GWM), MSc(GWM) and GradDipSc(GWM)
Postgraduate
Subject coordinator: Associate Professor N Merrick, National Centre for Groundwater Management

This subject, conducted through a combination of classroom and computer lab sessions, provides the computer modelling tools required for particular groundwater resource management underpinned by an adequate appreciation of the underlying theory and computer algorithms. Topics include conceptual modelling, analytical modelling, numerical modelling and solution algorithms applied to the governing differential equations. Emphasis is placed on finite difference and finite element methods with applications to groundwater resource studies, borefield management and optimisation problems.

Additional subject costs: Course notes cost $20. Textbook costs to be advised.

Assessment: Continuous assessment involving assignments, problems and short informal examinations.
