Overview

This course prepares registered nurses to function as anaesthetics and recovery room nurses in various health care settings.

Course aims

The course promotes a deep understanding of complex anaesthetics and recovery room issues as they relate to patient outcomes. It is designed to encourage the development of an anaesthetics and recovery room nurse who is able to provide holistic, patient-centred care during anaesthesia and recovery from surgical and procedural intervention.

Career options

Career options include specialty anaesthetics and recovery room nursing in perioperative settings and day surgery units.

Admission requirements

Applicants should be registered nurses with an Australian bachelor's degree in nursing or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but do have recent relevant work experience and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.

Applicants are normally expected to have concurrent employment in or access to the area of specialty and at least one year's full-time professional employment in nursing is desirable.

Applicants must submit a CV (maximum 3500 words) describing:

  • reasons for undertaking a postgraduate course within the faculty
  • type of roles undertaken in current and previous employment
  • details of current and previous work experience.

CVs can be lodged online at:

Applicants who do not have their name on the online register of the relevant state nursing registration board (e.g. the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW: www.nmb.nsw.gov.au), must provide a correctly verified copy of their registration to UAC with a covering letter stating their full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points, comprising three specified nursing subjects and one nursing elective (the Health Breakdown elective subject is recommended).

There are structured work-based learning opportunities for employees of Northern Sydney Central Coast Health (NSCCH) and North Shore Private Hospital.
