Overview

The Graduate Diploma in International Studies is part of an articulated program of study in which students develop or enhance their knowledge of the language and culture of a country chosen from the range offered in the International Studies program.

The program provides opportunities for students from any disciplinary background to study a language and culture other than English and thus add an international dimension to their undergraduate qualification.

Course aims

The program aims to enable students to learn or improve their knowledge of the language of the country they choose to study; learn about cultural diversity and social change; and learn about contemporary society in the country they choose to study.

Admission requirements

Academic qualifications considered for admission include a bachelor's degree, master's degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate in the same field of study.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-year, full-time or equivalent part-time basis.

Course structure

The course totals 48 credit points. There are three compulsory components which involve at least two semesters' study of a language and culture other than English and the subject 979333 International Studies Research Seminar.

Students can focus on one of the following countries or majors: Canada (Québec), Chile, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latino USA, Mexico, Spain or Switzerland.

Full-time students undertake 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students should undertake 16 credit points per semester.

Course program

The example programs below show subject choices for the German Language and Culture stream. Students undertaking one of the other language streams undertake a similar sequence of subjects.

The part-time program shows the three compulsory subjects (i.e. two Language and Culture subjects and International Studies Research Seminar) and, as electives, a further two Language and Culture subjects plus Contemporary Germany.

Articulation with UTS courses

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Diploma in International Studies, and the Master of Arts in International Studies (C04205).

Subjects undertaken for the graduate diploma can be credited as 48 credit points towards the Master of Arts in International Studies.

For students planning to articulate to the Master of Arts in International Studies it is highly recommended that they select the Contemporary Society elective relevant to the country major. Students intending to articulate to the Masters of Arts in International Studies and wanting to proceed to a period of in-country study must advise UTS: International Studies at least one semester prior to wanting to go overseas.
