Overview

The Master of Arts in International Studies is part of an articulated program of study in which students develop or enhance their knowledge of the language and culture of a country chosen from the range offered in the International Studies program.

Students have the opportunity to spend a semester at a university in their country of study, or write a dissertation related to it.

Course aims

The program aims to enable students to learn or improve their knowledge of the language of a country they choose to study, learn about cultural diversity and social change, and learn about contemporary society in the country they choose to study.

Admission requirements

Academic qualifications considered for admission include a bachelor's degree, master's degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate in the same field of study.

Recognition of prior learning

Subjects undertaken for the Graduate Diploma in International Studies (C06088) can be credited as 48 credit points towards this course.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year full-time, or equivalent part-time basis.

Course structure

The course totals 72 credit points of study and focuses on developing or extending students' experience of language and culture. There are three compulsory components of the program which involve at least two semesters of study of a language and culture other than English and the subject 979333 International Studies Research Seminar. Students can focus on one of the following countries or majors: Canada (Québec), Chile, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latino USA, Mexico, Spain or Switzerland.

Students may spend a semester overseas at an institution of higher education in the country of their language and culture major through arrangements made by UTS: International Studies.

Before undertaking a semester of In-country Study, students are required to have completed 48 credit points of their course. It is highly recommended that students also do the contemporary society elective subject relevant for their country major.

Full-time students undertake 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students should undertake 16 credit points per semester.
