The UTS ELSSA Centre is one of the longest-established university language centres in Australia, with a first class reputation for teaching and research. The Advanced Diploma in Australian Language and Culture (ADALC) has been jointly designed for international students by the ELSSA Centre and the Institute for International Studies. It may be studied as a study-abroad year in students' current degree, as part of a university-to-university exchange agreement, or as a stand-alone program.
The program provides English language development through the study of Australian society and culture, and may be undertaken by students who are second language speakers of English and have an English language test score lower than the UTS entry requirement.
To facilitate learning about Australian culture, the ELSSA Centre arranges for each student to experience life at UTS and in Sydney through a one-week 'shadowing' program with a UTS buddy, a one-semester observation of a selected subject in a UTS faculty and field trips to Australian landmarks.
The Advanced Diploma is aimed at two types of students:
International students who successfully complete the ADALC program become eligible to study in UTS faculties, providing they also meet any requirements of the relevant faculty.
Students must have reached an English language competence of IELTS 3.0 or TOEFL 450 (computer 133, internet based 45).
Students must have reached an English language competence of IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 510 (computer 180, internet based 64).
