Overview

This course is designed to provide registered nurses with a wide range of options to further their study in the field of nursing. Students gain the knowledge, expertise and competencies required for advanced clinical practice in one of many clinical specialty areas, or may pursue education or management. This course also provides eligible students with the opportunity to complete a nurse practitioner major (subject to final approval; contact the Faculty for further information).

Students can customise their program to meet personal learning needs or workplace requirements in order to further their career, choosing from a number of sub-majors: critical care, perioperative, anaesthetic and recovery, acute care, neuroscience, neonatal, children's, child and family health, mental health, clinical teaching, and nursing management.

Course aims

This course aims to:

  • develop the student's career as an advanced clinician, manager, educator or nurse practitioner
  • extend and enhance existing skills
  • help build confidence and leadership skills
  • provide academic experience and qualification, and
  • enhance career prospects.

Career options

Career options include advanced clinical practice, nursing management and nursing education, in both clinical and community areas.

Articulation

While the Master of Nursing is offered as a stand-alone qualification, it is also part of an articulated program of study comprising the majority of Graduate Certificates offered by the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, and the Graduate Diploma in Nursing (C07044).

Additional admission requirements

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in nursing or equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but who have recent relevant work experience may also be considered eligible (such applicants must present evidence of a capacity to undertake tertiary study).

Applicants are also expected to have had at least one year's full-time professional employment in nursing and are normally expected to have concurrent employment in their area of specialty.

Course duration and attendance

The Master of Nursing is offered on a one-and-a-half-year full-time, or three-year part-time basis.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 72 credit points (12 subjects). The course comprises one major (in advanced nursing practice, education, management, or nurse practitioner), one sub-major (in a clinical specialty, clinical teaching, or nursing management), and eight subjects including both core subjects and electives.
