Postgraduate coursework

School of Design

Two postgraduate coursework degrees are offered by the School of Design:

• Master of Animation (C04266) (not currently offered)
• Master of Design (C04243).

The Master of Animation (C04266) is the only qualification, at this level, devoted to animation in Australia. Coursework areas include traditional film animation, 2D and 3D digital animation, graphic visualisation, object-oriented programming and animation studies, culminating in the production of a short animated work.

Unique in Australia, the Master of Design (C04243) is intellectually vibrant, socially engaging, visionary, practice-focused and actively linked to industry. This course centres on building a design community network. It provides a postgraduate education that is flexible in both its practice orientation and research integration. With a focus on design evolution, innovative integration of new technologies, practice and student experimentation, the Master of Design is delivered by experienced studio leaders who are acknowledged leaders in their specific industries and professions.

School of Architecture

One postgraduate coursework degree is offered by the School of Architecture:

• Master of Architecture (C04235).

The Master of Architecture (C04235) is the second of a two-tiered degree structure and is the degree required for registration as an architect. The emphasis of this degree lies in educating students for the practice of architecture. The Master of Architecture is a professional degree, i.e. a qualification accepted for candidates seeking to take the professional examination of the Board of Architects and Australian Institute of Architects as a prerequisite to registration under the provision of the Architects Act 2003 (NSW). The Master of Architecture may be undertaken only after the successful completion of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture (C10004) degree (or equivalent); a degree that by itself does not lead to professional recognition.

• Master of Landscape Architecture (C04270)

The Master of Landscape Architecture provides students with the opportunity to collaborate alongside practitioners from international design studios and leading experts in the area of urban design.

Students engage in a variety of projects that are based upon the big questions that face global contemporary cities and landscapes: urban densification, climate change, declining resource supply (land, food and water) and the loss of biological diversity through ecological fragmentation and habitat destruction.

Using the most relevant and up-to-date methodologies and technologies, students participate in practice-based studios to develop their complex problem-solving skills in order to address the critical role of landscape in the cities of the future.

School of Built Environment

This school offers postgraduate programs in project management, property development, planning and real estate investment.

The planning program enhances knowledge and skills in urban analysis, policy and the use of emerging technologies. It has a strong emphasis on master planning, sustainability and urban design, equipping its graduates so they can respond to changing natural, economic and social environments. The engaged, practical nature of the course prepares graduates for leadership roles in government departments and agencies, major development companies, and private consulting firms.

The property development program provides a thorough and advanced grounding in all aspects of the property development process, markets and institutions, including the political, managerial, legal and physical systems which contribute to the effective management and development of property assets, property investment portfolios and development proposals.

The project management program provides practice-based knowledge, skills and tools necessary for the delivery of different types and sizes of projects and programs across all industry sectors, underpinned by theory and research. At the forefront of industry trends, the UTS program incorporates project complexity, program management, governance, reflective practice and leadership into its subject offerings. It has global recognition for its rigorous focus on quality.

The real estate investment program gives investment, property and finance professionals a competitive advantage in the global property investment boom. It deals with the finance, investment, management, valuation and analysis knowledge required to succeed in the global real estate investment sector. Students are able to integrate highly sought-after property and finance skillsets and advance their career.

Institute for Public Policy and Governance

Renowned for its research, industry engagement and international focus, the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG), incorporating the UTS: Centre for Local Government, forms a dynamic community of students, lecturers, researchers and practitioners. The institute offers postgraduate courses in applied policy and local government that equip students with hands-on experience and real-world skills.

The IPPG team works closely and maintains extensive professional networks with the university; governments; industry; and not-for-profit and community-based organisations across Australia and internationally. The institute translates its cutting-edge policy- and local government-related projects into the classroom to create real alignment between students' studies and professional practice in government and non-government organisations.

Design Innovation Research Centre

The Design Innovation Research Centre (DIRC) partners with a broad cross-section of industry, community and government to disrupt traditional business practices and mindsets to develop capability for complex problem solving.

The centre's work creates new opportunities for innovation, drives company growth and encourages our partners to reframe existing organisational challenges in new and exciting ways.

One postgraduate coursework degree is offered by DIRC:

• Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Innovation (C11257).

Progression

Postgraduate Design, Architecture and Building students may be excluded from further study at the University if they fail more than 50 per cent of the total number of enrolled credit points from the commencement of the course.

Postgraduate Design, Architecture and Building students may also be excluded from a course if they exceed the maximum time allowed for completion of that course (see rule 10.5). Students may appeal against such exclusion under rule 10.8.
