Overview

Project management is a process-orientated discipline that allows for the professional delivery of major projects in many different industry sectors. The UTS program provides a comprehensive grounding in the underlying principles, trends and practical aspects of project, program and portfolio management: time, cost, quality, risk, procurement, human resources, integration, scope and context.

Students can select subjects according to their level of experience: Choice Block 1 provides a structured pathway into the program; Choice Block 2 provides a greater choice for those with substantial industry experience by allowing them to choose their own pathway based on the gaps in their knowledge; and Choice Block 3 comprises advanced subjects intended for students with extensive project management experience.

Course aims

Successful graduates of the course can:

• apply relevant theory to practice
• develop and apply project management methodologies to suit different project and organisational contexts
• communicate effectively in culturally diverse settings
• take a lead role in project, program and portfolio management
• manage relationships between key stakeholders in a variety of local and international settings
• apply ethical practice to project governance
• apply creative problem solving to all phases of the project life cycle
• apply critical thinking, analytical and research skills to a range of project and program management contexts.

Project management is one of the fastest growing global professional disciplines in many local and international industries, including banking and finance, construction and engineering, event management, government, health and IT.

Academic requirements

Applicants must have completed a recognised Australian bachelor's degree in a related field of study, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Recognition of prior learning

Exemptions of up to 24 credit points may be given for equivalent prior learning. Applicants with a four-year degree in a related field of study may be given up to 24 credit points of exemptions.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year full-time, or three-year part-time basis. Because the intensive workshops are widely spaced throughout the year, many students choose to accelerate the part-time master's program and complete it within two years.

Professional recognition

Global accreditation is through the Project Management Institute. The course is also endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management, the Association of Project Management (UK) and the Project Management Institute of South Africa, and meets the Australian National Competency Standards for Project Management and PMBOK® (Project Management Body of Knowledge) Guide.
