Handbook description

In order to clarify their understanding of community health nursing, senior students in the Bachelor of Nursing have the opportunity to choose a clinical placement in a community nursing service. This subject prepares students for a possible career in this area by examining the theory and practice of community health nursing and its application in the clinical setting.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. understand the scope of community health nursing practice (ANMC competencies: 2.3, 2.4, 2.5)
  2. participate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health care (ANMC competencies: 5.2, 4.2, 7.2)
  3. explore the range of health resources available for, and appropriate to, the needs of a specific patient population (ANMC competencies: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3)
  4. participate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health care (ANMC competencies: 5.2, 7.1, 7.8)
  5. analyse the specific community nursing activities and approaches used in meeting the health care needs of the community (ANMC competencies: 3.3, 7.7, 5.1)
  6. explore the range of health care interventions available to patients within the specialty environment (ANMC competencies: 6.1, 7.8)
  7. evaluate the clinical facility/facilities in terms of how they meet the needs of individuals or sub-populations (ANMC competencies: 2.6, 3.3)
  8. reflect on learning experiences, including an analysis of own learning needs and outcomes (ANMC competencies: 3.3, 4.2)
  9. appreciate the complexity of the specialty environment in terms of patient needs and resources, and environmental and ethical issues (ANMC competencies: 2.3, 7.4, 8.2).

Content

The subject comprises two related components — an academic/theoretical component and a clinical placement — both related to a selected area of specialty nursing practice.

Academic/theoretical component

  • Background to community health nursing practice, including its social, political and historical antecedents.
  • An analysis of functional health patterns and/or the health profile of the sub-populations whose interest is served by the specialty nursing practice.
  • An awareness of the issues surrounding cultural competence within the particular area of specialty nursing practice.
  • Ways in which the specialty area of nursing practice contributes to sustainability, the development of social capital and public good.
  • Examples of evidence-based practice which inform the clinical decision-making undertaken in Community Health Nursing practice,
  • Legal, ethical and resource considerations pertinent community health nursing.
