11224 Architectural Design: Performance

6cp
Requisite(s): 11211 Architectural Design: Forming AND 11215 Architectural Design: Making
Undergraduate

This subject introduces the concept of the active building and the creative user. Recognising that buildings are mediators of environmental variables, as well as contributors to environmental change, it asks students to examine the consequences of this in design. Students consider environmental impacts on its immediate vicinity, its consumption of materials and energy and for those who use it. Along with the techniques for minimising energy consumption, the subject also considers other aspects of performance that might be addressed through concepts of interactivity, responsiveness and experiential design. Links are made between quantitative aspects of building performance and experiential aspects of performativity in the built environment. The shift is made from the design of static and passive form, to architecture as an active contributor. Individual and group design exercises are given that test performative aspects of buildings, examine responses to environmental variables and develop strategies for minimising potentially damaging environmental impacts.
