11215 Architectural Design: Making

6cp
Undergraduate

This subject introduces students to the design potentials of diverse materials and construction approaches in architecture. Material properties in structure and appearance and in assembly and combination are explored and their relationship to the design process and formal outcomes tested. Material qualities such as strength, durability, weathering, lightness, size of available elements, tactile qualities and associations are considered through design exercises and research. Materials may also be considered in terms of their embodied energy, recyclability and capacity to respond to environmental variables.

Experiments in techniques of making in the studio are used as a means for learning about material properties at the scale of building.
