SMJ08065 Management Consulting and Change
The Management Consulting sub-major emphasises the development of skills and knowledge for effective management consulting practice. It achieves this general purpose by focusing on:
- Diagnostic skills, e.g. action research, diagnostic research, evaluation, theory building research, case methods, data collection methods, data analysis.
- General organisational development and change skills, e.g. skills for managing large-scale change, intervention skills (organisational-wide, team, structural, cultural, strategic, human process and work design interventions).
- Intra- and inter-personal skills, e.g. presentation, political influence and selling, establishing trust and rapport, giving and receiving feedback, counselling and coaching, and negotiation.
The sub-major is suitable for students who, as current or potential managers or administrators, have gained or seek to gain competence in consulting skills and wish to apply these skills to their own work areas, for example, the expertise to introduce change and innovation in organisations. It is also relevant to students currently working or likely to work in specialised fields, such as reward systems, organisational design, quality, management information technology or business strategy. These field are becoming increasingly integrated with a management consulting process approach.
