MAJ01109 Urban Ecology
This is an interdisciplinary major that combines both the natural and built environments. It focuses on plants, animals and micro-organisms of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in both natural and urban areas, and the interactions of these living organisms with the non-living components of the ecosystems.
Students learn these concepts and skills through a dynamic combination of theory, laboratory practical, field work and project work.
Core study areas include ecology, aquatic ecology, geological processes, built environment design, landscape design and plant culture, plant physiology and ecophysiology, planning and design process, management of plants in landscape and environmental protection and management.
Graduates can work in a wide range of areas such as managing parks, bushland, botanical gardens, forest reserves, wildlife sanctuary, environmental protection, and water catchments. They can be, for example, biological scientists, ecologists, education or research officers, environmental and landscape consultants, and rangers.
