Overview

The UTS ELSSA Centre is one of the longest-established university academic language and literacy centres in Australia. The Advanced Diploma in Australian Language and Culture (ADALC) has been jointly designed for non-English speaking background international students by the ELSSA Centre and UTS: International Studies. It may be studied as a study-abroad year in students' current degree, as part of a university-to-university exchange agreement, or as a stand-alone program.

This program provides English language development through the study of Australian society and culture, and may be undertaken by students who are second language speakers of English and have an English language test score lower than the UTS entry requirement. To facilitate learning about Australian culture, the ELSSA Centre arranges for each student to experience life at UTS and in Sydney through a 'shadowing' program with a UTS buddy, a one-semester observation of a selected subject in a UTS faculty and excursions to sites of interest.

Admission requirements

Students must have reached an English language proficiency level of IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 510 (computer 180, internet based 64). Students who have not reached this level of English language proficiency, but who wish to be considered, should contact the ELSSA Centre.

Course duration and attendance

There are two options for the length of program undertaken:

  • study ADALC for one or two semesters full time, or
  • study ADALC for one semester then take an IELTS or TOEFL test; students who meet the UTS entry requirements can enrol in UTS faculty subjects for the second semester.
