Overview
This course is designed to provide nurse clinicians with the skills to meet the increased demands to deliver quality teaching in clinical settings. Registered nurses engage in clinical teaching at many different levels: with nursing students and new graduates, in orientation programs, and with communities through health promotion activities. Notwithstanding this diversity, the principles of adult learning apply to all.
Students have the opportunity to plan, develop, implement and evaluate a program of clinical education within their own practice area. This course provides a portable qualification and highly sought-after skills.
Course aims
This course aims to ensure that graduates are able to plan effective programs in diverse clinical settings for a variety of learners.
Admission requirements
Applicants should be registered nurses or midwives with an Australian bachelor's degree in nursing, midwifery or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but do have recent relevant work experience and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.
Employment and / or work experience in a teaching role would be an advantage.
Applicants must submit a CV (maximum 3500 words) describing:
- reasons for undertaking a postgraduate course within the faculty
- type of roles undertaken in current and previous employment
- details of current and previous work experience.

Applicants who do not have their name on the online register of the relevant state nursing registration board (e.g. the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW: www.nmb.nsw.gov.au), must provide a correctly verified copy of their registration to UAC with a covering letter stating their full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.Employment and / or work experience in a teaching role would be an advantage.
Course duration and attendance
The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.
Course structure
Students must complete a total of 24 credit points, comprising three specified nursing subjects and one nursing elective.
