Overview

This course prepares registered nurses to function as critical care nurses in various health care settings.

Students develop the specialised skills and knowledge to become critical care nurses and to recognise and support the unique characteristics of the critical care patient population.

Course aims

The course is designed to provide the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to enable registered nurses to:

  • practise safely and competently in the specialty of critical care nursing
  • synthesise specialty knowledge, skills and expertise in order to enhance the quality of care for patients and their families
  • make appropriate clinical judgments in relation to care of critically ill people
  • critically evaluate their practice and incorporate research findings and technologies when appropriate
  • develop the ability to actively contribute to the professional development of others
  • appropriately counsel and support patients and their families as they deal with their health and lifestyle adjustments
  • use research in order to make informed decisions about nursing practice.

Admission requirements

Applicants should be registered nurses with an Australian bachelor's degree in nursing or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but do have recent relevant work experience and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.

Applicants must have had at least one year's full-time professional employment in nursing.

Applicants are expected to have concurrent employment in or access to the area of specialty and must have had at least one year's full-time professional employment in nursing.

Applicants must submit a CV (maximum 3500 words) describing:

  • reasons for undertaking a postgraduate course within the faculty
  • type of roles undertaken in current and previous employment
  • details of current and previous work experience.

Applicants who do not have their name on the online register of the relevant state nursing registration board (e.g. the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW: www.nmb.nsw.gov.au) must provide a correctly verified copy of their registration to the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) with a covering letter stating their full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Subjects are offered via on-campus study days and supported by online learning. Part-time study is usually undertaken at a rate of two subjects a semester. The normal attendance per subject is four full days on-campus spread over the semester.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points of study, comprising four specified nursing subjects.

There are structured work-based learning opportunities for students who are employees of Northern Sydney Central Coast Health (NSCCH), Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS), Westmead Private Hospital or North Shore Private Hospital.

Employees of NSCCH or North Shore Private Hospital may undertake a Clinical Accreditation Program (CAP) with NSCCH. Employees of SSWAHS may undertake a CAP with SSWAHS and employees of Westmead Private Hospital may undertake a CAP with Westmead Private Hospital. This is at no cost to participants. Students who successfully complete a CAP are awarded exemption from the Specialty Clinical Practice subject.
