Overview
This course is designed to meet the graduate needs of registered nurses wishing to gain registration to practise in the area of midwifery. It provides a broad theoretical and clinical study of the area of midwifery, and includes a discussion of professional, sociopolitical and ethico-legal issues related to the family, and research skills that enhance midwifery practice and interpersonal processes. Students undertake concurrent employment as a student midwife in an accredited midwifery unit.
Midwives are in high demand at present, in both the public and private health systems, and the current shortage is expected to continue for some time.
Admission requirements
Applicants should be registered nurses with an Australian bachelor's degree in nursing or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but who do have recent relevant work experience and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.
Applicants are required to secure concurrent midwifery employment at a participating accredited midwifery unit. Applicants need to submit a separate application to participating hospitals in addition to the course application submitted to the Universities Admission Centre (UAC).
Applicants who do not have their name on the online register of the relevant state nursing registration board (e.g. the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW: www.nmb.nsw.gov.au) must provide a correctly verified copy of their registration to UAC with a covering letter stating their full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.
Applicants also need to be available to attend classes from early February, before the usual start of Autumn semester.
Course duration and attendance
The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery is offered over a 14-month, full-time period.
Course structure
Students must complete a total of 48 credit points comprising eight compulsory subjects.
Industrial training/professional practice
The course also requires one year, four days a week, of concurrent employment in an accredited midwifery unit in order for students to meet the requirements to gain midwifery certification with the Nurses and Midwives Board NSW.
