Overview
This course is designed to facilitate the advancement of midwifery theory and practice through a range of perspectives based on research, education, management and the delivery of care in a variety of situations. It offers students the opportunity to customise their program to meet personal learning needs or workplace requirements.
Students develop a complex understanding of issues related to interdisciplinary collaboration in the development of maternity services, and engage in critical thinking in order to inform clinical judgment and decision making within the midwifery context of woman-centred practice.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a Certificate in Midwifery or a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery or equivalent, leading to registration as a midwife. Applicants must be eligible for registration as a midwife with the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board.
Applicants must submit a CV (maximum 3500 words) describing:
- reasons for undertaking a postgraduate course within the Faculty
- type of roles undertaken in current and previous employment
- details of current and previous work experience.

Applicants who do not have their name on the online register of the relevant state nursing/midwifery registration board (e.g. the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW: www.nmb.nsw.gov.au), must provide a correctly verified copy of their registration to UAC with a covering letter stating their full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.
Recognition of prior learning
Students who hold an existing Graduate Diploma in Midwifery are eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning in the form of exemptions from four specified subjects (24 credit points).
Course duration and attendance
The course is offered over a two-year, part-time period. Students with a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery may complete this course over a one-year, part-time period.
Course structure
This course comprises 48 credit points, made up of six specified subjects plus either a project or two 500-level elective subjects. Students who hold a Certificate in Midwifery must complete a total of 48 credit points with a minimum of 18 credit points at 500 level.
