Overview

This course is designed for graduates in media production, or those with significant experience in the field, to allow them to advance their skills and theoretical understanding of the consumption and production of media products.

The course further develops professional skills in at least one area of media production: multimedia, sound, radio, music, performance, or film and video. Under supervision, students create a major piece of production work in film, video, sound, radio, new media, performance or installation.

Course aims

This course aims to:

• provide students with the opportunity to sharpen their levels of conceptual skills and critical thinking in media production
• enhance their knowledge of media cultures and industries
• increase their capacity to conceptualise innovative, creative project ideas independently
• research creative project ideas to an advanced level, and
• experience the creative and technical development of a significant production.

Career options

Career options include cinematographer, documentary maker, filmmaker, film producer, new media producer, screenwriter or sound designer.

Admission requirements

Academic qualifications considered for admission include a bachelor's degree, master's degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate in the same field of study.

Applicants are also required to:

1. submit a personal statement and CV
2. submit a portfolio of up to three selected pieces of creative work in any format, e.g. film, video, sound/radio recording of CD-ROM. Students must clearly mark their name and phone number on each piece of work submitted. Students may wish to write a background description of these and should clearly explain their contribution to the final production. Do not submit originals as these will not be returned
3. provide a proposal describing the project they may take in year two of the course. This should include a brief synopsis, format, length and a description of the student's visual and/or aural style (maximum 500 words).

Recognition of prior learning

Students who successfully complete the graduate certificate or the graduate diploma are eligible for recognition of prior learning in the master's program for completed subjects.

Course duration and attendance

This course is one-and-a-half years of full-time, or equivalent part-time study.

Course structure

Students complete 48 credit points in one of three streams: Film and Video, New Media, or Sound; and a master's project equivalent to 24 credit points.

Full-time students are required to undertake 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students should undertake 16 credit points per semester.

Example programs in each of the three possible streams are shown below. Check the UTS online timetable when selecting subjects from option lists as not all subjects are offered in the proposed semester.

Note: the Film and Video stream full-time and part-time programs shown are for Autumn-commencing students. Students commencing in Spring semester undertake the same sequence of subjects as Autumn-commencing students.

Example programs for the New Media and Sound streams are shown for full-time programs only. Students wishing to undertake part-time study in these programs should use the full-time typical programs as a guide to the sequence when selecting two subjects per semester.
