Detailed biological characteristics of Australian streams and lakes are covered in the context of biomonitoring and assessment of water quality and 'ecological health', and their management. Assessment techniques include the AUSRIVAS approach, which is related to other water quality indicators, particularly limnochemistry. This subject is targeted to those seeking a career as professional freshwater ecologists. This subject also confers NSW EPA certification to conduct AUSRIVAS surveys. Additionally, the modular format permits professionals to participate in the subject to gain AUSRIVAS accreditation while undertaking full-time employment. Three one-day excursions are included in this subject.
