Overview

This course shows how to successfully manage a software development project in a systematic and professional manner. It covers the elements of software engineering and how the technology and the project team can be used to deliver on time, to budget and within specification. The eight subjects in the degree are designed as an integrated group to meet these objectives.

Additional admission requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature for the Master of Engineering Software Management should:

  1. be a graduate in Engineering from UTS with some professional knowledge in the IT industry, or
  2. hold a degree or equivalent from another higher education institution deemed to be equivalent to the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Applied Science degree at UTS, or
  3. hold a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Engineering at a level of performance deemed by the Faculty Board to be satisfactory evidence of an ability to undertake Master's candidature.

Additional assumed knowledge

Candidates in admission categories 2 and 3 must also have some professional knowledge in the IT industry; an adequate science background (mathematics, physics, scientific communication at secondary school level); and experience of software development.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is considered in accordance with the University policy on RPL (which can be viewed online). The maximum amount of RPL granted is: 24 credit points if articulating from a Graduate Certificate course; 18 credit points for UTS BE graduates; and 12 credit points for all other students (without exception).

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is two years if two subjects are taken per semester. The course is also available to fee-paying overseas students on a full-time basis, taking one year to complete.

The program is structured for evening attendance.

Course structure

The course comprises 48 credit points of study made up of seven compulsory subjects and one postgraduate engineering elective (in the range 49000–49999).
