The aim of this subject is to introduce issues and basic principles of the software engineering life cycle, process models and development paradigms; the principles and practice of object-orientated programming and an ability to program in a 'foundation language' (C++). The objectives are to develop a software framework into which more detailed material regarding specific aspects of object-orientated software programming techniques and associated programming issues can fit, as well as provide basic software programming skills. Additional objectives include strengthening students' fluency in understanding and presenting technical information, the role of teams and their dynamics, and effective functioning within a software development organisation.
Within the subject, the principles are applied to small software projects which are set as assignments. Students shall complete their assignments individually or in small groups.
Assessment: Class work and assignments (30 per cent), presentations (30 per cent), and informal examinations (40 per cent).
