60503 Scanning Probe Microscopy
3cp;
five-day block
Requisite(s): 68101 Foundations of Physics OR 68041 Physical Aspects of Nature
The scanning probe microscope (SPM) has rapidly become a pivotal research tool in both the biological and physical sciences and is now widely acknowledged as enabling technology in the emerging fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology. These instruments allow direct three-dimensional imaging and measurement of the structural and physical (optical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic) properties of specimen as well as chemical interactions at the nanometre scale. The central theme of this subject is the practical application of scanning probe microscopy and its related techniques to a broad range of current scientific research. This is a hands-on subject where students learn how to operate a variety of SPMs and interpret the data they provide. The integrated lecture/laboratory five-day block-mode program is designed to provide both a practical and a theoretical understanding of SPM using modern instrumentation in a multidisciplinary research environment. This elective is relevant to students undertaking any of the degree programs within the Faculty of Science.
