60502 Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis

This subject investigates the application of electron microscopy and microanalysis to the analysis of materials. It integrates lectures and labs to provide both a practical and theoretical understanding of microscopy and microanalysis techniques using modern equipment in a multidisciplinary environment. This elective is relevant to students undertaking any degree program within the physical sciences discipline (chemistry, forensic science, geoscience, environmental science, materials science and applied physics). Students can tailor laboratory programs to applications commonly encountered within particular disciplines. Experimental assignments and the major hands-on project enhance understanding and develop experimental skills.

Assessment: Subject assessment includes daily class tests worth 20 per cent, experimental assignments worth 30 per cent and a major project worth 50 per cent. Open-book class tests are given to reinforce theoretical concepts underpinning microscopy and microanalysis.
