Overview

Students in this course gain the skills and knowledge for a career in biotechnology and learn how to commercialise technology-based initiatives. The course provides a broad knowledge of modern biotechnology with an emphasis on DNA and gene technology, cell biology, and up-to-date industrial applications for biotechnology combined with entrepreneurial and innovation studies.

This is a hands-on course that develops critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills in preparation for a career in the international biotechnology industry. Graduates of the course have the added advantage of developing entrepreneurial know-how and associated business skills.

Career options

Career options include management, research and development, and production positions in the biotechnology industry, including medical, biopharmaceutical, agribusiness, chemical, and food and beverage industries. Graduates can also start their own companies.

Additional admission requirements

This course is only offered to local students who are current school leavers, with a strict quota based on the availability of resources.

Additional assumed knowledge

English; Mathematics Extension 1; Chemistry.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Due to the special nature of this course, and the acceptance of only current school leaver applications, no recognition of prior learning for previous study is possible.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is three years, full time. Full-time attendance during Spring and Autumn semesters involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Biotechnology Innovation requires students to complete 144 credit points of subjects, divided into two streams: the Disciplinary and the Entrepreneurial.

The Disciplinary stream consists of 88 credit points of biotechnology subjects.

The Entrepreneurial stream consists of 56 credit points of subjects introducing basic concepts in entrepreneurship, innovation, information technology, business and sustainability. Also in the Entrepreneurial stream, students undertake a 6-credit-point Capstone Project, which involves drawing on scientific, innovation, and venture capital expertise in the University and its partners. Subjects in the Entrepreneurial stream are drawn from several faculties.

Industrial training/professional practice

Students undertake a minimum of eight weeks of entrepreneurial experience in Summer session between the Years 2 and 3.
