Overview

The course combines a professional degree with immersion in another language and culture, enhancing professional training and career options. This combined degree seeks to augment the value of social inquiry by broadening awareness and understanding of another language and culture.

The course offers students a powerful mix of skills and knowledge which may be applied in many professional areas.

Career options

Work opportunities in international organisations and in the global economy are expanding. This course prepares students for these opportunities by incorporating and teaching diversity, ways of understanding and working within other cultures, the ability to understand different social and political frameworks, skills in exploring historical materials as well as researching current social problems and devising policy possibilities, and developing communication strategies using new media. Career options are also enhanced by international experience, making students more marketable to prospective employers.

Additional admission requirements

Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Arts in Communication. There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has introduced a variation of the inpUTS Scheme as it applies to certain prospective students applying for any of the Bachelor of Arts in Communication courses. For details on this scheme, visit:

Additional assumed knowledge

HSC English and computer literacy (i.e. word-processing skills and familiarity with other applications). There are no prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.

Additional recognition of prior learning

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has established recognition of prior learning packages with the following institutions for the courses listed below:

• TAFE NSW: Diploma in Community Services (Welfare)
• College of Higher Vocational Studies, City University of Hong Kong: Associate of Social Science in Community Services Management; Associate of Social Science in Public Administration and Management; Associate of Social Work.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a five-year, full-time basis.

Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

Course structure

A total of 240 credit points is allocated to this combined degree course: 144 credit points to the Communication degree and 96 credit points to the International Studies component.
