50121 Theory and Method1

6cp
Professional Strand – Social Inquiry and Change – 100 level

This subject introduces students to a broad range of the most important theoretical positions and methodological practices they will encounter in later Social Inquiry subjects. The nature of theory is explained in depth, as are the main characteristics of the methods used in researching society by sociologists, anthropologists, social historians and political scientists. Modes of communicating the findings of such research methods are also examined. The subject develops understanding of a variety of ways of theorising societies, and links this to an analysis of the most appropriate methods for collecting and processing different types of information about social life. There is a sustained focus on contemporary life in Sydney as a framework for exploring social inquiry theories and methods. The subject requires active student participation in tutorials and in online discussions throughout the semester.
