Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Advertising is part of an articulated program in Public Communication designed for enthusiastic current and prospective advertising/media practitioners and advertisers wishing to enhance their skills and professional standing.

Course aims

Students completing this course will have:

  • an appreciation and understanding of the nature of advertising and communication management, and an ability to apply theories to practice
  • an understanding of the contexts in which ideas may engage audiences
  • a sensitivity to the ethical and legal issues related to advertising and communication
  • a capacity to critically reflect on the roles and responsibilities of advertisers and practitioners
  • the capability to critique, create, produce and evaluate an advertising strategy from a brand and consumer perspective, and
  • effective skills as team players and communicators.

Career options

Career options include roles in the advertising and media industries, and roles related to corporate communication, internal communication, public affairs, and international and integrated communication.

Articulation

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations (C11060), the Graduate Diploma in Communication Management (C06039), and the Master of Arts in Communication Management (C04108).

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a satisfactory level of education, background and capability. It is expected that applicants will have an undergraduate degree and/or professional experience in the field and that they will have demonstrated a satisfactory level of interest and knowledge in the area of advertising.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Advertising will be granted 24 credit points recognition of prior learning for completed subjects on application to the Graduate Diploma in Communication Management or the Master of Arts in Communication Management.

Course duration and attendance

The Graduate Certificate in Advertising is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Course structure

This course totals 24 credit points, consisting of three 8-credit points core subjects.

Students undertake at least 8 credit points per semester.
