Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Public Relations is part of an articulated program in Public Communication designed for enthusiastic current and prospective public relations practitioners wishing to enhance their skills and professional standing.

Course aims

Students completing this course will have: a good understanding of the nature of communication and communication management; a sensitivity to ethical and legal issues related to communication; a capacity to critically reflect on the role and responsibilities of communicators; an understanding of contexts of communication; and the capacity to analyse, design, cost and evaluate a public relations strategy and campaign.

Career options

Career options include roles in the public relations industry, and roles related to corporate communication, internal communication, public affairs, international communication, community relations, integrated communication, media liaison and communication advising.

Articulation

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations, the Graduate Diploma in Communication Management (C06039), and the Master of Arts in Communication Management (C04108).

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a satisfactory level of education, background and capability. It is expected that applicants will have an undergraduate degree and/or professional experience in the field and that they will have demonstrated a satisfactory level of interest and knowledge in the area of public relations.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma and who are admitted to a more advanced-level course in the program are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects in the more advanced course.

Course duration and attendance

The Graduate Certificate in Public Relations is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate in Public Relations totals 24 credit points of study and consists of three core 8-credit-point subjects.

Students undertake at least 8 credit points per semester.
