Overview

The Master of Arts in Journalism is part of an articulated program of study for people who want to start a journalism career and for experienced journalists wanting to broaden their skills and professional technological expertise and refresh the intellectual basis of their practice.

This is the only program of its kind in Sydney where the Australian media is increasingly concentrating. The journalism staff at UTS has a record of excellence in professional practice reflected in media contacts. In addition, the course has close links with the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, which provides a professional setting for student work.

Course aims

Graduates of the program have strong research and reporting skills and a knowledge and critical understanding of the media, are equipped with the necessary skills to either enter professional practice in the media or continue with additional skills and intellectual depth, strive to promote the important role of professional and ethical journalism in the service of the public, and have an understanding of the role of the media in local, regional, national and global contexts.

Career options

Career options include reporter or editor in local, corporate, national and international print and broadcast media organisations.

Articulation

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Journalism (C11058), the Graduate Diploma in Journalism (C06037), and the Master of Arts in Journalism.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a very strong level of education, background and capability. It is expected that applicants will have an undergraduate degree and/or professional experience in the field and that they will have demonstrated a high level of interest and knowledge in the area of journalism.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Journalism or the Graduate Diploma in Journalism and who are admitted to this course are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year full-time, or equivalent part-time basis. Subjects may be offered in weekly classes, or in accelerated or block mode. Accelerated mode enables full-time students to meet prerequisite requirements. Block mode generally requires attendance at weekend blocks or intensive four-week blocks plus participation in web-based activities.

Course structure

The course totals 72 credit points of study. Students must complete core subjects totalling 32 credit points, three elective subjects totalling 24 credit points, and project subjects totalling 16 credit points.

In their final year, students may choose to complete either a 16-credit-point research project, or an 8-credit-point journalism professional project plus an 8-credit-point journalism studies project.

Full-time students are required to undertake 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students are required to undertake at least 8 credit points per semester.
