This course is for those interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), who do not have a teaching qualification. It specifically focuses on the teaching of adult students. Students study linguistic foundations for language teachers, language teaching methodology, language development, teaching and learning literacy, programming assessment and evaluation, phonology and pronunciation, as well as particating in professional experience teaching in TESOL.
The course is comprehensive and practical. It is tailored to cater to the needs of participants who as yet have no teaching experience, as well as to the needs of participants with experience, but no recognised initial teaching qualification.
Career options include teacher of English as a second language (ESL) in Australia, or teacher of English as a foreign language (EFL) in overseas contexts.
The Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching in TESOL articulates into the Master of Arts in TESOL (C04178), the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (C04182), and the Master of Arts in Language and Literacy (C04181).
The essential entry requirement is an undergraduate degree. Preference is given to applicants who have prior experience in ESL/EFL contexts.
Recognition of prior learning may be granted to applicants on the basis of prior teacher training or experience in the area of ESL/EFL. Recognition of prior learning is decided on a case-by-case basis.
The Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching in TESOL is normally completed over two years of part-time study. It is also possible to complete the course as a full-time student over a shorter period of time. Professional Practice subjects are usually run over three or four Saturday workshops.
The Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching in TESOL consists of eight compulsory 6-credit-point subjects comprising a total of 48 credit points.
