This course is for participants who wish to gain an initial specialist qualification in the field of adult basic education.
The course provides graduates with a widely recognised specialist teaching qualification.
The course aims to provide students with a sound understanding of policies and practices in teaching literacy and numeracy to adults, up-to-date teaching and learning strategies, skills in designing/implementing and evaluating a variety of learning activities and curricula, and theoretical approaches to literacy and numeracy education.
Career options include employment in public and private adult education institutions that offer opportunities for adults to learn and build on basic literacy and numeracy skills.
The Graduate Diploma in Literacy and Numeracy Education articulates with the Master of Arts in Language and Literacy (C04181), the Master of Arts in TESOL (C04178), and the Master of Education (C04200).

Recognition of prior learning may be granted on the basis of relevant prior teacher training or experience; this is decided on a case-by-case basis.
The Graduate Diploma in Literacy and Numeracy Education is normally completed over two years of part-time study.
The course is delivered in a combination of on-campus and mixed modes. Some subjects are available in distance mode only.
The Graduate Diploma in Literacy and Numeracy Education totals 48 credit points of study, made up of seven 6-credit-point compulsory subjects and one 6-credit-point elective, chosen from the list given in CBK90269.
