Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a TESOL qualification designed for teachers who are working in the field of TESOL or related fields and already have a recognised teaching qualification. Students will study theory and practice of TESOL, language development, teaching and learning literacy, language in social context, plus elective subjects.

Graduates gain an internationally recognised teaching qualification which prepares them for teaching English in Australia or overseas.

Course aims

The course aims to: enable students to achieve or consolidate specialist, professional competence as practitioners in teaching and programming for spoken and written language development; develop students' capacity for theoretically informed reflective practice; and develop students' understanding of the linguistic demands of teaching and learning.

Career options

Career options include employment in TAFE colleges, adult and community education, adult migrant English centres, ELICOS centres, outreach programs, language colleges, language, literacy and numeracy assistance centres or programs in industry, and as English as a second language (ESL) teachers in the school system.

Articulation

This course articulates with the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Other Languages (TESOL) (C04178), the Master of Arts in Language and Literacy (C04181), and the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (C04182).

Additional admission requirements

Entry requirements are:

  • an undergraduate degree or equivalent
  • a recognised teaching qualification
  • teaching experience, and
  • concurrent relevant teaching experience (desirable).

Additional recognition of prior learning

The Graduate Diploma in TESOL is a specialist post-service teaching qualification. Therefore recognition of prior learning cannot be granted on the basis of initial pre-service teaching qualifications.

Course duration and attendance

The Graduate Diploma in TESOL is normally completed in two years of part-time study. It is also possible to complete the course as a full-time student over one year.

Course structure

This course consists of six 6-credit-point subjects. To be eligible for the award, students must complete the four compulsory core subjects and a further two elective subjects chosen from CBK90266, making a total of 36 credit points.
